Easy Ways to Grow Shallots at Home

Red onion is one of the kitchen ingredients that every mother must-have. Having many benefits, red onions can be used for cooking and medicine.

1. Prepare the necessary materials

To grow shallots at home, you will need some equipment such as:

No need to be difficult to find onion seeds. Just look for onions from the kitchen that look the best and are freshest.

2. How to grow onions

After all the equipment is ready, now is the time to plant onions.

  • Mix fertile soil and planting medium and then put it in a pot. Fill the soil mixture into the pot until it is 3/4 full.
  • Then pick up some of the nicest onions. Avoid choosing onions that already have black spots because they can cause the tree to get diseased.
  • Slice off the tip of the onion until you can see the flesh of the onion. If the onion has buds, there is no need to cut it again.
  • Place the onions in the ground to a depth of 5 cm and cover with soil. No need to press the soil pile. Let there be cavities in the soil.
  • Water regularly in the morning and evening. Use plant spray so as not to damage the seedlings.

3. How to care for onion plants

As usual, water the onions in the pot 2 times a day. Avoid watering too much water to prevent the onions from rotting.

Avoid putting too many onions in the pot as it will be too cramped. Allow some time for the onion to develop in the soil.

4. How to harvest onions

Shallots can usually be harvested after 60-90 days of planting. If you want to see signs that onions are ready to harvest, look for leaves that are slightly wilted and dry.

You can also see the potting soil, usually, when you are ready to harvest you will see onions sticking up.

Once harvested, it can be consumed immediately for a fresh taste. While the rest can be dried in the sun for 1 or 2 weeks to reduce the water content.

Onions that have reduced water content can be stored longer and do not rot easily.
