1. How to Grow Broccoli by Selecting Seeds

Broccoli seeds planted must be of good quality.

Requirements for good seeds or seeds include:

  • The seeds are intact, there are no wounds or defects.
  • Free from dirt, pests, and diseases.
  • Pure seeds are not mixed with other seeds.
  • Taken from superior seed types.
  • Has a germination rate of 80 percent.

2. Seeds of Broccoli

To get good broccoli seeds, prepare the seeding first.

Things that need to be done at the seedling stage, are as follows:
  • Sterilize the seeds by soaking them in a fungicide solution in hot water around 55 degrees Celsius for 15-30 minutes.
  • Soak the seeds for about 12 hours or until the seeds look cracked. So that the seeds germinate quickly.
  • Seedling is done by placing the seeds in small trays or polybags as deep as 0.2-1.0 centimeters.
  • Seedling media consists of a mixture of mature drum fertilizer sieve with fine soil. The ratio is 1:2 or 1:1.

After sowing the seeds, the next step is to plant the seeds.

The method:
  • Use manure, compost, and soil for planting media.
  • Add chemical fertilizers as basic fertilizer.
  • After the seedlings have 3-4 leaves or are about 1 month old, do the planting by transferring them to polybags or pots in the yard of the house.
How to take care of broccoli plants during seeding

For broccoli plants to grow well, care needs to be taken starting from fertilization, watering, and pest control.

The things that need to be considered in the treatment are:
  • Fertilization is done 1 week, 3 weeks after planting, and 5 weeks after planting.
  • If fertilizing by dissolving NPK (fertilizer), give about 1 teaspoon into one bucket. Then sprinkled on the ground around the plant.
  • Watering is done in the morning and evening.
  • In the dry season, do watering 1-2 times a day, especially at the time of transplanting and when the flowers are forming.
  • If the rainy season, the plants do not need to be watered.
  • Spray pesticides if there are pests or diseases on plants.
How to Harvest and Postharvest
When the flower reaches its maximum size, or when the broccoli plant is 55–100 days old, (depending on the variety or cultivar of the plant), then broccoli can be harvested.

Broccoli that has been harvested is then placed in a shady place before the sorting or selection process is carried out.

The selection is made based on the diameter of the flower head which consists of 4 classes, namely:
  • more than 30 centimeters
  • 25–30 centimeters
  • 20–25 centimeters
  • 15-20 centimeters.
For storage, you should place it in a dark room with a temperature of 200 Celsius with a humidity of 75 -85 percent.

Broccoli can also be stored in a cold room with a temperature of 40 Celsius and a humidity of 85-95 percent.
